Ribera was one of the greatest painters of 17th century Spain. This canvas is one of a series representing the famous philosophers of antiquity and depicts the Cynical philosopher of Thebes, Crates. Rejecting idealization, Ribera sought out the actual expressions of his figures and here he renders in his own distinctively harsh naturalism the philosopher Crates who abandoned his property to become a religious mendicant.
