Amidst a landscape studded with the ruins of a castle, an old man is shown surrounded by a myriad of demons, including a claw-footed female who holds out a glass to the old man. The scene represents St. Anthony who was tempted by demons as he lived the life of a hermit in the wilderness. Teniers the younger was one of the best known of 17th century Flemish painters and he frequently depicted this subject.
