After traveling throughout Italy, Marten de Vos became a representative painter of Antwerp. This work shows the Last Supper as it is traditionally rendered: Christ is at the center of the table, which runs lengthwise along the canvas, surrounded by his disciples who are exchanging surprised glances with one another. In the use of color, one can detect the brightness of the Venetian style amid the pearl-like luster that is characteristic of northern Mannerism.
