Lecture/Concert
Jacques Callot: Theater of Realism and Fantasy Exhibition “Theater of Fantasy via the Harp”

Jacques Callot created a number of print series, several of which are included in this exhibition. This harp concert will express the fantastical and grotesque elements seen in Callot’s works, and just as in his series works, here the various individual melodies work together to create a single narrative. The composer Tokuyama Minako wrote a new work especially for this concert, transcribing the alphabet rendering of Jacques Callot’s name into a musical score. We hope the audience will enjoy the fascinating, and puzzling, reverberations born of Callot’s name.

Masterpieces from the Museum of Capodimonte in Naples - Lecture Concert "The music coming from the paintings"

During this concert the works displayed in the Capodimonte exhibition will be projected on a screen and it will be possible to enjoy the masterpieces with both eyes and ears. For example, while the work by Tiziano Vecellio "St. Mary Magdalene" is shown, a song by Frescobaldi that has the same theme as the painting, "Sonetto spirituale: Maddalena alla Croce (Spiritual sonnet: Mary Magdalene at the Cross)", will be performed.
Keiko Takii's lecture, interweaved with countertenor Tadashi Miroku's talk, will focus not only on the musical taste of Italian noble families, including the Farnese family, during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but also on their food habits and table manners.

Corot's Musical Tastes

This two-part event is a lecture and a concert. Musical instruments frequently appear in Corot’s paintings. The mandolin is one such instrument. During Corot’s period the mandolin underwent a change from gut strings to steel strings, and the method of playing the instrument changed with this shift. The first half of this event will focus on the mandolin. Corot was particularly fond of music and he is known to have attended many concerts and operas. He would sketch the players during performances, and there remain some Corot sketches of a harpist. The second section of this event will focus on harp music as we explore Corot’s musical tastes.
