Born in Genoa, Magnasco worked in his hometown and in Florence and Milan. He developed a highly individual style of dramatic landscapes rendered in fierce brush strokes. This canvas was painted during Magnasco's most prosperous years, those of his second Milanese period of 1718-1725. The dark, but rich color palette, swirling brush strokes, and tall, slender figures crouching half hidden in shadows all contribute to the extremely dramatic, illusionary feel of Magnasco's painted world.
