Collection Highlight “Upon the Centennial of Claude Monet’s Death”
The year 2026 marks the centenary of the death of the major Impressionist painter, Claude Monet (1840–1926). To commemorate this milestone, all of the Monet works currently housed at the National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) are presented this summer in a special display within the NMWA Collection Galleries.
The NMWA's connection with Monet can also be traced back to 1921, when Matsukata Kōjirō (1866–1950), the businessman whose collection became the foundation of the NMWA, visited the artist at his home in Giverny. Since the MNWA opened in 1959, paintings that Matsukata acquired directly from Monet—including Water Lilies—have remained beloved features of its permanent collection displays.
This Collection Highlight display presents all 19 Monet works currently in the Museum's care, including drawings that are only rarely exhibited for conservation reasons, as well as a painting newly placed on deposit in 2025. We hope you will enjoy this opportunity to experience Monet's landscapes and their enduring symphony of light and color, still brilliant and undimmed a century after the artist's death.
