The year 2026 (Reiwa 8) marks the 100th anniversary of the 1926 start of Japan's Shōwa period (1926-1989). This period which began with turbulence and hardships also ushered in revival and growth. To mark the Shōwa centennial, the NMWA is presenting special displays as part of the Japanese government's the “Shōwa 100th” Projects at related institutions nationwide.

The NMWA is Japan's only museum with both a Conservation Department and a Conservation Science Department, and thus, conservation and restoration are one of the focal efforts at the NMWA. This display of important archival material and artworks presents an overview of conservation and restoration work at the NMWA from its founding in 1959 through 1989, the end of the Shōwa era.

We hope that visitors will enjoy this "behind the scenes" view of some of the NMWA's efforts to preserve, protect, and hand on our precious artworks.
