Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period. Hokusai’s novel compositions and superb expressive powers which vividly captured people and nature had a massive and enduring impact on both Japanese and Western art. The Hokusai and Japonisme exhibition held at the NMWA in 2017-18 revealed how his art influenced Monet, Degas, and other Impressionists as it spread throughout Europe and North America. Indeed, his influence can even be seen in the works of Lithuania’s foremost artist, M. K. Čiurlionis.

This exhibition is the debut display of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji series (ca. 1830-33) from the Iuchi Collection, which was placed on deposit at the NMWA in 2024. The exhibition presents the complete set of 46 woodblock prints from his iconic series, as well as two additional prints – alternate impressions of the particularly celebrated Under the Wave off Kanagawa (commonly known as “The Great Wave”) and Clear Day with a Southern Breeze (known as “Red Fuji”). One impression of the “Great Wave” is among the finest extant examples and is in superb condition; while one impression of the Clear Day with a Southern Breeze is an exceedingly rare monochrome-blue version of the normally full-color work, nicknamed “Blue Fuji.” Under the supervision of Professor Higuchi Kazutaka of Jumonji Gakuen Women’s University, these 48 prints are displayed in six groups that trace the print’s preparatory drawing production process. We hope that encountering this landmark series at the NMWA, an institution specializing in Western art, will offer an opportunity not only to rediscover Hokusai’s artistic genius, but also to reflect on how it captivated Monet and myriad other modern Western artists.

We also adopt a special display method for three prints, revealing both their front and back sides. We hope this approach will allow you to share in the experience of Edo-period viewers, who would pick up a print and enjoy it from both sides.
