This exhibition is the debut display of the Iuchi Collection’s Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji series (ca. 1830-33) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), which was placed on deposit at the NMWA in 2024. The complete set of 46 woodblock prints from Hokusai’s iconic series will be on view.

Furthermore, two additional prints—alternate impressions of the particularly celebrated Under the Wave off Kanagawa (commonly known as “The Great Wave”) and Clear Day with a Southern Breeze (known as “Red Fuji”)— will also be shown. One impression of the “Great Wave” is among the finest extant examples and is in superb condition; while one impression of the Clear Day with a Southern Breeze is an exceedingly rare monochrome blue version of the normally full-color work, nicknamed “Blue Fuji.” This exhibition offers an unprecedented opportunity to view these 48 prints at the NMWA, a museum renowned for its collection of works by Monet and other Western artists.

Special display methods will also be adopted for some prints, revealing both their front and back sides. We hope this approach will allow you to share in the experience of Edo-period viewers, who would pick up a print and enjoy it from both sides.
